10 Years Ago The College Board has recognized Carl VanLue and Joseph Doherty from Wawasee High School as advanced placement scholars in recognition of their achievement on the college-level AP examination. Both earned grades of 3 or higher on several AP exams, which are graded on a 5-point scale. Batson, technical service manager for the company’s southwestern United States territory; John Vocke and Donald Harman, Warsaw, are joining as technical service representatives. Donald Clemens, co-owner of Rabb Water Systems, accepted a Dura-cube “Million Pound Club” award in recognition of selling more than one million pounds of water softener salt. Jefferson Elementary School’s third-grade class made a replica of Plimouth Plantation entirely out of paper. Jefferson is the adopted school of United Telephone, which has put the project on display at their headquarters on U.S. 30, Warsaw. Members of Multi-Township EMS made a holiday visit to Miller’s Merry Manor, Grace Village, Mason Health Care, Prairie View and Royal Oaks while costumed as a Christmas tree, Santa and an elf. Carnations were presented to the residents. 50 Years Ago Sharon Weaver, Pierceton, has been selected as one of four B-team cheerleaders for the Manchester College basketball games beginning Dec. 1. Sharon, a freshman at Manchester, was formerly a cheerleader at Pierceton High School. Leesburg High School Junior Achievement Co., Lee Tronics, manufactures Christmas candles. Madison Elementary School first-grade teachers Mrs. Julia Boles, Mrs. William Cruver and Mrs. Adrian Jeffers supervised the children in making their own Pilgrim and Indian costumes. They ate their lunch together in the cafeteria. 75 Years Ago Howard Betz, 512 North Lake St., Warsaw, was called to Armour Institute in Chicago, where the snow-cruiser was built, to direct vital repairs and changes to a bearing which had failed to function properly and delayed its start. He is a former physics professor at Valparaiso University and was able to make the needed repairs in one day. After making the trip through Indiana from Chicago, the trip terminates in Boston, where the cruiser will be placed aboard a ship of the expedition to the South Pole. The cruiser weighs 35 tons and has wheels 10 feet in diameter. The gigantic $100,000 snow-cruiser attracted throngs of Warsawans and Kosciusko County residents following its arrival in Warsaw Oct. 26. It will make a stop in Fort Wayne.
