An early morning fire lasted more than seven hours and destroyed two businesses in South Whitley Saturday, Dec. 10. Five departments battled the fire, which started at 201 S. State St. around 2 a.m. The two-story brick building housed Key Pharmacy and the Brownstone Cafe on the first floor; apartments were on the second. One person was inside, but no injuries were reported.

    Also Saturday morning, an electrical fire caused damage to Terry's Automotive on East Winona Ave. Five fire trucks responded to the scene around 5:45 a.m., and had the blaze under control in a half hour. Terry Head owns the property.

25 Years

Shirley Hathaway, Pierceton, is the national grand prize winner of a $3,000 shopping spree Monday, Dec. 10, at Builder's Square, Fort Wayne. She said her husband, Chris, strongly suggested she concentrate her efforts in the power tool aisle.

    A recognition service for Dr. and Mrs. Howard Smith will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, at First Presbyterian Church, S. High St. Dr. Smith has been pastor for 13 years and will be retiring at the end of the year. He has been in the ministry for more than 35 years, starting in his native Canada. While in Warsaw, he helped organize Combined Community Services and shared his "Moments of Hope" messages over WRSW.

50 Years

Open house will be held in the new headquarters of the South Whitley-Cleveland Township Fire Department on Saturday, Dec. 4. Coffee and donuts will be served at the new facility across from the post office. Wilbur Blaine has been re-elected as Fire Chief, with Joe Huffman as assistant chief and Max Glasseley as secretary-treasurer.

    Pvt. Dane Lane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benny E. Lane, and a 1965 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and is training at San Diego, Calif.

    Bill Knapp is now the new owner and operator of Gerald Oswalt's Corner Barber Shop, 101-1/2 East Center Street. The shop will be known as "The Mug & Brush." His associates are Ronald Gilliam and Donald Schue.

75 Years

Stephenson's, of Warsaw, will sponsor Ruth Whitehead, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Whitehead, of northwest of Pierceton, as she represents Kosciusko County in the beauty contest at the muck crops show at Garrett Monday evening, Nov. 25. Miss Whitehead is a tall brunette and a senior at Pierceton High School.

    Harold Kratzsch, of Warsaw, was ordered by city police not to ride his bicycle for seven days as a penalty for riding another boy on the handle bars.

    Mrs. Clarence Bibler, of East Winona Avenue, Warsaw, caught her right hand in an electric clothes wringer, drawn into the rolls up to her wrist. She was alone, neighbors could not here her calls due to noise from the nearby railroad. Finally her efforts to free herself resulted in the machine coming apart, the top breaking off.
