Neff, of Claypool, ends his service Dec. 1 with the Nickel Plate Railroad as a telegraph operator agent at Argos. He came with his parents to Claypool in 1907 from Warsaw and attended the Claypool school on the hill in town. During his senior year, he worked for the railroad on weekends as telegraph operator, having learned Morse Code from his father. After graduation, during the war years, he became a full-time operator. All freight and mail were handled by the railroad; 12 passenger trains came through. Mr. Neff became agent at Claypool in 1940, but soon afterward, trucks came into use and jobs were abolished, so Royal became an agent at Argos in 1961. The Nickel Plate was soon taken over by the Norfolk and Western. Mr. Neff will continue his job as a tax consultant from January through April and his hobby of keeping his garden, flowers and lawn neat and attractive.
