Students of Sacred Heart School participated in a math-a-thon for St. Jude Hospital. The top three fundraisers were Jose Figueroa, Page Desenberg and Reid Cameron. Grand total raised from the event was $2,035.

    Fourth and fifth-graders from Pierceton Elementary School competed in the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Nov. 17. The Cubs took home first place for the fifth year in a row: Avery Robbins, Bridget Dawson, Felicia Yates, Chelsee Christoffel, Jamie Wall, James Poe, Stephanie Wheeler, Doug Bolinger, Lucas Thomas, Amy Rogers, Zach Cox, Drake Maggard, Toni Reiff, Rachel Kimberlin, Brett Smith.

    Warsaw Wastewater Utility employees Troy Skees, David Leiter and Duane Griner recently achieved certification.

Congratulations: Armina Schmucker, "Keeping Care at Heart" recipient for December, Kosciusko Community Hospital.

    Triton fourth-graders picked popcorn at the Robert Wiedeman farm near Bourbon recently. The popcorn will be shelled and sold, with proceeds used to fund the Little Hoosiers Club.

    Local Red Cross volunteers Layne Warren, of Claypool, and Shirley Finlay, of Pierceton, left Warsaw Nov. 27 for the disaster area in Lake County, where water is as high as the roofs of some houses. Both are doing damage assessment in the Highland area, where more than 350 people have been evacuated.

 50 Years

Ann Kaiser, 8, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kaiser, Milford, and Mary Sue Armbruster, 12,  daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Armbruster, Syracuse, ranked among the top twirlers at the recent Northern Indiana Baton Twirling Contest at Waterloo, receiving first-place trophies in their age groups. Ann won a medal in baton strutting.

    Dick Lesh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lesh, Warsaw, is a senior quarterback for the Hanover College Panthers. He has led the team at the quarterback spot for four years, lettering each year. While attending Warsaw High School, he was selected as all-conference and was an all-state choice in football.

75 Years

The abandoned Hickory Grove school house with one-half acre of surrounding ground, located three miles southeast of North Webster, will be sold to the highest bidder Thursday, December 12, it was announced by Tippecanoe Township trustee Earl Himes. The school, erected more than 40 years ago, is one of the few remaining one-room schoolhouses in Kosciusko County, and has not been in use for the past several years. Children of that vicinity are transported by bus to the North Webster School. Mrs. Lulu Wright Scholl, now of South Bend, was one-time teacher.

    Atwood High School cagesters claimed a 36-20 victory over the Claypool Knights last night, Nov. 19, at Etna Green. The Greyhounds gained a 9 to 5 margin at the end of the first quarter and hammered away relentlessly throughout the contest.
