The circulation department of Warsaw Community Public Library was 55,321 items away from certain glory as of the end of November. If that number of books, CDs, toys, etc., are checked out by the end of December, the library will have lent more than half a million items in 2001, another record in the library’s history. Another record of sorts was set when the reference desk answered 9,177 questions, compared to 7,662 in 2000.

Washington Elementary School Principal Frank Anglin presented a certificate to pupil Andrea Slegal, one of a contingent of local runners who will be competing in a national race in Los Angeles, Calif., Dec. 13. Other runners who are competing are Warsaw Community High School sophomores Beckie Weihler and Leigh Woodward, and Warsaw Middle School seventh-grader Jay Hicks. They will travel to Los Angeles for The Athletes Congress 3,000-meter cross country event featuring runners from all over the United States.

David Castaldi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Castaldi, Warsaw, has received the $500 Haskins and Sells award given the top commerce student at Notre Dame University. David, a senior, will come home for Christmas vacation next Saturday. His sister, Diana, a junior in education at St. Mary’s College, South Bend, will come Dec. 20.

Between 50 and 60 Kosciusko County pupils who appeared in one-act play contests in the county, in which the Claypool High School was winner, attended the one-act play festival at Fort Wayne recently. County Superintendent and Mrs. Harry E. Lewallen were also present. Representatives from Claypool, Syracuse, Milford, Silver Lake, Sidney, Burket, Beaver Dam, Pierceton, Mentone and Etna Green were in the audience.
