10 Years Ago More than 300 community members came together to celebrate cultural diversity Monday at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration luncheon at Rodeheaver Auditorium. The focus of Monday’s program was a dramatic re-enactment of the highlights of the life of Harriet Tubman, a former slave who was known for her work with the underground railroad. The re-enactment, coordinated by drama teacher Dana McAfee, was performed by members of the Warsaw Community High School drama team. 25 Years Ago Warsaw Community High School’s boys swim team raised its record to 11-1 with a sound 115-57 thumping over Elkhart Memorial recently. The Tigers only failed to win two of the events for the night. Leading the way for Warsaw were Kenton Hoppus, Chad Twombly, Eric Mohler, Pete Dyba and Rory Callaghan as all three were double winners. 50 Years Ago This recipe is from the Women’s Exchange column for Apple, Date and Nut Cake. Combine 1 cup chopped dates, 1 cup grated apples, 1 cup boiling water and 1 teaspoon baking soda and let cool. Mix 1/2 cup shortening, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla together. Alternately add date and flour mixture (1-1/2 cups sifted flour, 1 teaspoon salt). Add 1 cup chopped nuts and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes in 9 1/4 x 13 inch pan. Cook 4 tablespoons melted butter, 1 cup coconut or nuts, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 2 tablespoons milk over low heat until brown sugar bubbles and spread on hot cake. Place under broiler until slightly browned. Watch carefully. 75 Years Ago The Calendar Club met recently at the Methodist Church. Mrs. C.W. Smith led the devotionals after which the usual business meeting was held. Curtis Garber sang a group of three songs, “Just For Today,” “Friend o’ Mine!” and “When I Grow Too Old to Dream.” He was accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Everette Perry. Mrs. Thurl Pottenger reviewed the book “Streamling Your Mind” by Mursell. Mrs. Avery Garber and the January committee served refreshments.
