10 Years Ago The 17th annual Martin Luther King Day luncheon was held at Rodeheaver Auditorium Monday, Jan. 17. Fort Wayne television news anchor Terra Brantley was the keynote speaker with her theme, “Putting Feet to the Dream Help Fill a Need.” Roz Morgan, Our Father’s House, spoke of serving the community. April Knepper told how Heartline had helped her. Two scholarships were given: Indiana University student Angele Marandet and Bethel College student Diana Kent. The “Participation Players” from Manchester College performed the play “Magical Faces” at Akron Elementary School. The play tells about a town where laughter and smiling have been banished and the efforts of two young people and their magical friends to restore happiness. 25 Years Ago Warsaw honored the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jan. 15 at the Shrine Building. Highlight of the celebration was an address given by Julian Bond, former Georgia senator and current professor at Harvard University, entitled “Dreams are Fulfilled Through Families.” Tom and Sue Swick, Winona Lake, have nine children. Four of the children are celebrating their first birthday today; Andrew, Alex, Tara and Carly were born Jan. 16, 1989. The others are Erin, Ben and triplets Micah, Isaac and Kyla. Carl Sands and Sons’ hog farming operation is a family venture. Steve Sands and his brother-in-law, Mike Secrest, designed the black and red packaging of their whole hog sausage, which is sold in the family business, Sands Mini Marts in Silver Lake and Mentone. 50 Years Ago Edson, 4, Ilene, 3, and Dale, 2, children of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Zimmerman, Claypool, enjoyed the activities at the county basketball tourney along with 3,400 other fans. The tourney ends tonight with the crowning of the champion, coming from this afternoon’s games between Claypool/Larwill and Mentone/Silver Lake. Third-graders in Kosciusko County schools look forward to their trip to the Shrine Circus in Fort Wayne Feb. 5. The Shrine Club is making plans: Lanny Mauzy, chairman; Jim Mitchell, co-chairman; Jim Bair, transportation; Keith Horn and N. Bruce Howe, food. About 1,200 persons are included in the caravan. The Rev. Sam Wolgemuth, director of Kosciusko County Youth for Christ, was elected president of Youth for Christ International at their Pittsburgh convention Jan. 5-8. 75 Years Ago Paul Rizer, 19, son of baker Merl Rizer, will be heard over WENR, Chicago, Jan. 7, at 5 o’clock. Paul, a fine, entertaining impersonator, has aspirations of becoming a radio announcer and this may be his first step. He’ll impersonate W.C. Fields, Fred Allen, Tizzy Lish, Walter Winchell and Elmer Blurt, radio and screen stars, on the Maurice B. Sach’s amateur program. First prize: $75 and a wrist watch. Baker Boys’ Club is $21.66 richer. The boys collected 646 old tires from throughout the county during the Christmas holiday and sold them to Junk Dealer Myer Levin, Warsaw. Winner of the contest and new bicycle was Warsaw’s Harvey Hamman. Other winners: Joe Adams, Claypool; Howard Osbun, Winona Lake; Donald Miller, Clarence Gay, L. Goshert, G. Bair, W. Gay and Dick Rife, all of Warsaw. Ford’s Auto Supply (H.A. Ford) sponsored the contest.
