The Warsaw Rotary Club members honored their own recently as Alan Alderfer presented a program on his 135-mile-fundraising ride to eradicate polio. Alderfer raised $10,186 locally. This amount will be matched 3-to-1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank. With the Gates’ donation, Alderfer’s trip from Merrillville to Fort Wayne means a total of $40,744 for the PolioPlus program. Unfortunately,  Alderfer faced cold, rainy weather for the eight-hour journey. Portions of the ride were documented on videotape by Rotary president Andy Lewis, who drove the support van behind the Alderfer and Associates CEO.

Democratic Councilman Dayton Paxton remarked, “Well, well, it looks quite home-like.” The reference was made recently at council meeting regarding the grass green drapes with large flower designs on the “inside” which now adorn the council chamber. Monday was the first council meeting since the curtains were put up. These drapes were put up by the Warsaw-Winona Lake Club Federation, which now shares the room above the fire station with the city, both organizations, the clubs and the council meeting once a month. Friends of Police Chief Frank R. Lucas at first accused him of opening the Lucas light house keeping apartments.
