Fifth-graders at Leesburg Elementary are trying to make a difference in the lives of children half a world away – by making and selling hundreds of “monster” cookies. According to Samantha Pierog, 10-1/2, “When President Bush told all kids to send $1 for the Red Cross, the fifth-grade students and teachers decided to make monster cookies and sell them for $1.” The kids gathered in Leesburg’s cafeteria after school this week to bake the cookies; so far they have approximately 500, but are planning to make more.

Warsaw’s Ryan Weihler and Manchester’s Eric Underwood ended their high school cross country careers in outstanding fashion here in Saturday’s Indiana High School Athletic Association State Cross Country Championships. The pair, running as individuals over the 5,000-meter South Grove Golf Course track, both turned in personal best times and finished as All-State performers.

Going to Oxford this fall is John D. Evans III, who was at Winona Lake all summer long. Evans, a Harvard graduate, lives at Hyannis Port, Mass., normally. His home is right near the president’s, and the Kennedys cut through the Evans yard to go to the beach.

Mr. and Mrs. John Snell will visit over the weekend at Bloomington with the latter’s brother, Tom Watkins, who is a student at Indiana University. They will be accompanied to Indianapolis by Earl Cochran, who will visit there with Mrs. Cochran.
