10 Years Ago Henry Smith, former Wawasee Schools superintendent, was presented the Northern Lakes Conference Service Award for his many years of leadership and contributions. He has served the corporation as principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent and Wawasee School Corp. Board of Trustees member. The Whitko High School art department competed in the 34th World School Children’s Art Exhibition in the Republic of China, Taipei. She has worked in United’s general office since beginning her career with the company in 1974, and was promoted from junior engineer, a position she held since November of 1981. Prior to that, McFarren worked for three years as an engineering aid. She and her husband, Alan, live in Winona Lake. The new Business Communications Bureau of United Telephone is headed by Pete Chinworth and Janet Gensinger and is designed to coordinate all services and inquiries for multi-line business customers statewide. 50 Years Ago The Times-Union Calendar Girl for 1964 is Betty Morrison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morrison, 428 W. Porter St. Betty will be 3 this month. Eldon LeRoy Rager, 1711 Willow Lane, Warsaw, was named pharmacist at Walter’s Drug Store. He graduated from Akron High School in 1959 and received his pharmacist training at Purdue University, graduating in June of 1963. Harry Kyler was elected president for 1964 of the “Sidney Triple S” 4-H Club at the Sidney School. Bill was 19 and Glenn, 26. Winifred Davis Whiteneck, former Daily Times Society Editor, is celebrating a birthday anniversary. Herbert Kehler, son of Civil War veteran the late Amos Kehler, who came here from Ohio in the early 1880s, has died. Herb was an intense patriot, serving as quartermaster-sergeant in Warsaw’s Spanish War unit. He worked on many committees and drives here through the World War. As a young man, he was a balloon parachute jumper. For many years he limped from an injury he received in a rough landing.
