10 Years Ago Baker Youth Clubs held the annual Adult-Child Game and Awards Night Dec. 22. Salleigh Torpy, a Madison Elementary School second-grader, was named Girl of the Year and Dakota Fuller, a Harrison Elementary School third-grader, Boy of the Year. Executive director of BYC is Tracy Furnivall. Shanna Zolman, a Wawasee High School graduate and 2002 Indiana Miss Basketball, scored 16 points Thursday night to lead the Tennessee Lady Vols to a 72-54 victory over Arkansas. A 95 percent free throw shooter, Zolman went 3-of-6 at the line. Her father and high school coach, Kem Zolman, had told her to “relax.” Because of recent weather conditions, a number of county roads around Tippecanoe Valley High School are under water. Athletic Director Duane Burkhart encourages fans to allow more time if planning to attend sporting events. 25 Years Ago First National Bank of Warsaw and Leesburg Elementary School have joined together as partners in education under the Adopt-a-School Program. One of the many ventures they experience together involves giving students the opportunity to participate in their own savings accounts. Each student deposits a maximum of 50 cents a week into the account at “teller booths” staffed by employees. Jim Tinkey is Leesburg Bank branch manager. The Second Annual Whitko Community School Corporation faculty recital will be held Jan. 25 at the Whitko High School auditorium. Proceeds will benefit the music department. Lowman, Warsaw, was plant manager of Clausing Inc. (formerly known as Power King) in Warsaw for 19 years and for the past six years has been superintendent of plant facilities. During this period, he has seen the plant on Cleveland Street grow from 20,000 square feet to an area of more than 120,000 square feet today. Lowman is retiring due to ill health and wants to thank all of the employees of Clausing and his business associates for their fine cooperation and friendship. Eight 16-inch high trophies will again be presented this year by the Times-Union and radio stations WRSW AM-FM to the high school basketball players selected by the coaches to the All-County Tournament team.
