10 Years Ago “The Story of a Mighty Oak” is a recently published book featuring an oak tree on the playground of Akron Elementary School, believed to be the oldest living things in Akron. The story features the 2001-02 second-grade class of Janet Morgan gathering more than 5,000 acorns from the giant bur oak tree on the school’s playground. The acorns were delivered to the Hensler Nursery near Hamlet to be planted. The tree is estimated to be 190 years old or older, is 80 feet tall, has a diameter of 53 inches and a circumference of 14 feet near its base. 25 Years Ago The February 1988 issue of the national magazine “Highlights for Children” has published a drawing titled “My Family.” The artist is Elizabeth Makula, Claypool, a kindergarten student at Akron Elementary School. She is the daughter of Douglas and Jeanne Makula. 50 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Henry Faulkner, of Little Barbee Lake, recently returned from an interesting trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the reception for Senator Birch Bayh. The Faulkners, who received a special invitation from Governor Matt Welsh and Senator Bayh, were among several Warsawans who attended the reception. Mr. Faulkner is employed with the State Highway Department. 75 Years Ago Robert and Vernon Kinney, sons of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Kinney, have returned to their home near Morris Chapel from a 5,000-mile motor trip in their 1916 Ford. The boys traveled through Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, and east to Florida before returning to their home.
