10 Years Ago Lt. Gov. Kathy Davis presided over the Hoosier Homestead Award ceremony, which honors Indiana farms that have been in the same family for at least 100 consecutive years. The state recognized 33 farms as centennial homesteads and 61 as sesquicentennial. The Captain Joseph Hayes Farm in Dearborn County, owned by William and Barbara Corning, was established in 1791 and received a bicentennial award. Centennial awards were presented to two families in Kosciusko County: the Bouse farm established in 1894, and the Weaver farm established in 1848. 25 Years Ago Tricia Netzley, Claypool Elementary School second-grader, was the grand-prize winner of the schoolwide pumpkin decoration contest. She won a $15 gift certificate from Walmart for her pumpkin, “Miss Veggie.” Prettiest pumpkins winners were Darcy Winteregg, Melinda Mumford and Jason Allen; scariest: Ryan Kimes, Josh and Jon Knisely, and Kari Bloom; most creative: Flurry Jacobs, Joel and Aaron Brubaker and Jenell Hawley. Rachael Greenhow, daughter of Peter and Sharon Greenhow, Bourbon, was named Triton Junior Miss Woman of the Year. Jennifer Weirick was 1st runner-up; Terri Bates, 2nd runner-up; Robyn Askins, 3rd runner-up; Jenelle Reed, scholastic achievement award. Last year’s winner, Wendy Rust, went on to win state competition, the first state winner from Triton in the 25-year history of the event. 50 Years Ago The local American Legion’s junior color guard placed third in district competition at Knightstown. The unit was formed just three weeks ago by Commander Jack Bullers and entered the contest after only one practice under the name Warsaw Junior Cowboys. All are Sons of the Legion and will appear at the Warsaw-Columbia City High School football game Oct. 21. Members are Ray Earl, Ronnie Yates, Brad Long, Ed Mumford, Jim and Tod Sloan, Jim Copeland and David Long. John R. Hall, newest member of the local Hall and Marose Agency established more than 20 years ago by his father, W. Robert Hall, has successfully completed a home office sales course of the Aetna Co. 75 Years Ago The Japanese beetle traps installed several weeks ago in sections of Warsaw and Kosciusko County by the U.S. Agriculture Department have been removed and the check has been completed. Beetles were discovered in a number of traps. Syracuse firemen Friday morning extinguished a blaze in front of the Syracuse-Wawasee bakery, which for a time threatened to engulf the entire entrance. Flames were licking upward around the storefront and windows when firemen arrived. Arthur Snavely, Syracuse shoemaker, owns the building and Floyd Gingrich operates the bakery. Junior Stump, Pierceton, accepted a position with Playtime Products of Warsaw.
