10 Years Ago Jennifer Wilson, Winona Lake, was chosen as one of the first group of freshmen at the University of Indianapolis to receive the new Lugar Academic Recognition Award. The award, which provides $3,500 per year for four years, is based on the number of college preparatory courses the students took in high school and their grade point average in those courses. Bryan made many speeches at Winona Lake during the years from 1910 to 1915. Bryan served in that capacity (director) while secretary of state. While Bryan was famous for his “Cross of Gold” speech and his defending the Bible in Tennessee, he also gained fame as an eater. 75 Years Ago Warsaw High School’s “varsity” squad for 1938 posed for a photo for The Times cameraman, which was published on the front page. At the time of taking the photo they had been given fourth ranking place in Indiana state basketball by prominent Indianapolis sports writers, due to their victories over Rochester and Elkhart. Those in the published photo were Howard Levin, Junior Ferguson, Mike Light, Bob Buell, Raymond Newby, Charles Hay, Harold Stokes, Bob Chambers, Ben Detterman and Ralph Bibler.
