Warsaw and Kosciusko County are the headquarters this month for a visit of 37 students and nine leaders from Perm, Russia, arranged by Dick McCleary, Boy Scout Troop 715 leader. Perm is a cultural, educational, industrial and one of the largest cities in Russia. The group toured Warsaw Community High School and will perform shows at Lakeview and Lakeland Christian schools.
When news of the Dec. 26 magnitude 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Indonesia reached Joe Wilkey, president of World Compassion Network, he began making plans to help. He reached the island of Sri Lanka Jan. 2. Wilkey, an ordained minister, established WCN in 2002. He organized a relief trip to Florida last year following a series of hurricanes.

Senior Airman John Michael Ticer, son of Glenn and Diana Smith, Warsaw, graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice during winter commencement ceremonies at the University of Nebraska, Omaha.

Guy Lombardo’s Royal Canadians will provide a classy touch when they perform two matinee shows at the Wagon Wheel Theatre on Mother’s Day, May 13. Al Pierson leads the band for the late Guy Lombardo. Sawyer Brown’s show is sold out for Feb. 9; Desert Rose Band performs March 16; The Guess Who comes to Warsaw April 7.

The Times-Union north district manager, Leon Vance, announced today that a motor route has been established in the Syracuse-Wawasee area with Mrs. William Bailey, Enchanted Hills, Lake Wawasee, as the driver. Vance stated that the north motor route is in addition to the present route managed by William Hapner, Milford area.
Syracuse High School dress code: blouses and shirts must be tucked in, nylon parkas and windbreakers will not be worn in class, no sweatshirts worn inside-out, only the top button of shirts can be left open, boys should be well shaved, any dress distracting to students and teachers will not be acceptable.
Cromwell town board members (Tom DeBrular, Terrai Leamon, Ernest Calbeck, Lois Harper) indicated that there will be major repairs on the streets this summer.

 Warsaw’s Justice of the Peace Ed Smith ushered in 1940 with a big box of firecrackers. One drug store and all restaurants were open Jan. 1. Upon entering, you were greeted by bleary-eyed colleagues who hadn’t slept much the night before.
As 1940 blossomed into the world, so did little boy Fitzgerald, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fitzgerald, Mentone. He was perhaps the first baby born in the county New Year’s Day, arriving at the McDonald Hospital at 1:30 a.m. Jan. 1.
Six-inch ice covers Webster Lake. Ice fishermen are bagging bass and bluegills, and ice packers around North Webster are getting ready for harvest and storage.
