Former Warsaw hoops star Chanda Kline, the 1978 Miss Basketball, has been announced as a 2004 inductee into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Kline, who played for Coach Janice Soyez, averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds per game her senior year in leading the Tigers to their second state championship in 1978. As a sophomore, she was the leading scorer of the first state tournament in 1976 with 45 points. She finished her career with 1,113 points and earned 13 varsity letters.

The Warsaw Street Department normally uses 600-800 tons of salt on the streets and sidewalks during the average winter. It’s only Jan. 9, and more than 500 tons have been used. Pat Ragan, public works superintendent, says, “We haven’t seen a lot of snow, but the rain, sleet, and light snow flurries make the pavements slippery. We don’t shut down for the night, we keep on going until it’s over.”
Workers continue construction on the new shopping plaza on U.S. 30 East. The anchor store of the plaza will be Wal-Mart, a discount department store.
Robert Phillips was elected president of the Milford Town Board for 1989. James Amsden is fire chief; assistants are Dennis Newcomer and Keith Hunsberger; secretary, Traci Beer; treasurer, Douglas Ruch.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer A. Kent, Jr., 304 Sixth St., Winona Lake, and Mr. and Mrs. Morton E. Huffer, 318 N. Roosevelt St., Warsaw, welcomed New Year’s babies born Wednesday at the Murphy Medical Center. Mrs. Kent holds her six-pound, 15-ounce boy born at 3:40 a.m. Mrs. Huffer holds her six-pound, 11-ounce girl born at 8:13 a.m.
The name of the Reed Funeral Home in Mentone has been officially changed to the King-Reed Memorial Home.
Councilman Ray Strayer Jr. was seen by Attorney Brooks Pinnick playing hockey last Sunday with his two sons, Jeff, 12, and Dan, 11. Their home is at Springhill Acres, and with Pike Lake frozen they can almost enjoy the sport in their own backyard.
