10 Years Ago A Manchester High School senior was honored as an outstanding writer, among state winners of the 2002 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award in Writing. Scott Zubowski was one of 670 seniors recognized by the NCTE. Students were selected based on samples of their best prose or verse and on impromptu themes that are written under supervision. 25 Years Ago This favorite recipe for Popcorn Cake was contributed by Mary Kessie, a Times-Union employee. One large, well-greased angel food pan; Four quarts popped corn (buttered). Syrup: One cup white sugar; 1/3 cup Karo light syrup; 1/3 cup water; Add later, one cup small red and green gum drops (optional). Bring syrup mixture to thread stage, boil, color if desired. Pour syrup over popped corn. add gumdrops if desired (cut in half) and about 1/2 cup dry roasted peanuts and pour syrup over popped corn. Butter hands and press mixture lightly into angel food pan. Let stand until cooled. Insert wet steak knife around edges, turn upside down on plate. As a Christmas treat, put a large red candle in the center and decorate the bottom edge with greenery. 50 Years Ago State Highway Commission officials announced today that a public hearing will be held Dec. 12 in the Kosciusko County Courthouse concerning the proposed Marshall County to east of Warsaw link of new dual-laned U.S. 30, which includes the Warsaw bypass. The project involves dual paved traffic lanes, each 24 feet wide, separated by a variable width center median, 50 feet wide for the most part. Total gross length to be considered at this hearing is 14.062 miles, all in Kosciusko County. 75 Years Ago Walter Songer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Songer, Burket, was awarded a varsity letter for outstanding achievement as a freshman member of Wabash College football team. Songer, former star center of Mentone High School’s regional basketball team in 1935, is a tackle. His father now coaches Burket High School’s basketball team.
