Leesburg firefighter Bob Cleveland gives first-graders Ryan Marshall and Jena Kammerer books during the culmination of a month-long celebration of reading at Leesburg Elementary School. Students participated in a variety of activities including a pep rally with the fire department, who hand-delivered a brand new book to every child in the school. First-grade teacher Stacy Huffer wanted students to know that “real heroes read.”
Kelsie Thompson, daughter of James and Patti Thompson and a senior at Warsaw Community High School, has been selected as a National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist.

Robert Ashman, retiring president of the Kosciusko County Mobile Meals board of directors, receives from new president Ken DePoy a cut glass sandwich tray in appreciation for his many years of service.
Jones Appliance has opened a temporary store at 216 W. Market St., Warsaw, in the old Rogers TV building. A permanent location will be at 1023 E. Winona Avenue in the future. Jones Appliance employees include Mark Jones, Brian Beam and Max Jones.
All local exchange telephone companies in the United States will begin charging a higher rate for interstate access service beginning Dec. 1, from $2.60 per month to $3.20 per month.

Officers for the Beaver Dam Junior High School have been elected. Eighth-grade: Larry Hartman, president; Connie Ault, vice president; Gary Groninger, secretary-treasurer. Seventh-grade: David French, president; Douglas Davis, vice president; Kerry Deardorff, secretary-treasurer. Student council: Jackie Hoffman, president; Dennis Spice, vice president; Sharon Harrold, secretary.
Eight acres of land across the street from Washington School were a gift to the Warsaw school system from local industrialist Frank Saemann. Land for the site of Warsaw Community High School was a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Gast.

John Banks, Link Hay, Herschel Leiter, Bud Moon, George Fisher, Hays Glass, Clint Dederich, Clarence Maish, Wilbur Maish Jr., Bert Phelps, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Landis, Dale Lynch and Paul Elliott, all from Warsaw, attended the Tuffy Latta-Julius Piazza fight Monday night in Huntington.
Malcolm Bowman, George Bruner and Robert Delp were hosts Monday evening at the latter’s home on West Market Street at a pink and white shower for Mrs. Reuben Williams. Five tables of contract bridge progressed. Refreshments were served at small tables decorated with fall flowers.
