Warsaw's downtown streets and sidewalks were filled with trick-or-treaters during the Spooktacular Friday, Oct. 28. Merchants passed out treats. Jackie Long of the Chocolate Cafe and Boutique and Abby Meeks of Abby's Antiques and Beads gave candy to the costumed visitors.
Hamline University, St. Paul, Minn., inducted track and field standout Steve Jungbauer, Leesburg, into their Athletics Hall of Fame in a special ceremony Oct. 22 in the Klas Center. He earned four varsity letters, setting school records in the pole vault for both indoor and outdoor events. He added meet and conference records. Jungbauer is Kosciusko County YMCA chief executive officer.

25 Years

Five-term Warsaw mayor (1951, 1959, 1967, 1971, 1979) Paul E. "Mike" Hodges, 81, passed away Oct. 20, 1990. He was born Feb. 9, 1909 in Warsaw to Merle P. and Bertha Shoemaker Hodges. On April 19, 1969, he married Sheila Babcock. In the early 30s, he was a merchant policeman and fire truck driver. He owned and operated his own construction company for more than 50 years, retiring in 1974. Many buildings in Warsaw, including the  City Hall at Market and High Streets, were built by his company. He was instrumental in R.R. Donnelley coming to Warsaw, the modern development of the Warsaw Airport and was one of the founders of the Rozella Ford Golf Course, serving 10 years on the board of directors.

 50 Years

Little Debbie Rogers slept through the rumble and roar of The Times-Union press run, while her brother, Larry, energetically banged his heels against a wooden cabinet. They are going to help their dad, Larry, celebrate "Newspaper Week" Oct.12.

    Sam Cormany, Warsaw, and Max Deaton, Claypool, Railway Express employees, load out a shipment of "ditty bags" made by the local chapter of the American Red Cross for overseas shipment to servicemen on the battle field of Viet Nam. Blue Bell Co. (James Morgan, plant manager in Warsaw) and Kline's Department Store (John Helfrich) donated the material, dark blue denim and tape. Each bag is outfitted with a razor, shaving cream, comb, tooth brush, writing paper, and paper backed book.

 75 Years

Leroy A. Melick, 67, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 8, a short time after opening his filling station in Etna Green. He was one of the town's leading business men, born in Etna Green on October 10, 1873 to the late Samuel and Miranda Melick. For many years, he had lived and operated a grocery store in Warsaw, becoming a railway mail clerk. He is survived by his widow Etta (Darling) and eight children; Betty Ann, Mary E., Esther, Lela, Helen, Glenn, Donald and Loren. The family resided on North Buffalo Street near Center Lake.

    The bicycle of Glen Bair, reported stolen Sunday night from the rack near the city hall, was found late Monday in the 700 block on East Fort Wayne Street.
