Tracy M. Stump, daughter of Chester and Susan, Leesburg, has been promoted to the rank of private first class in the U.S. Army. She is a corrections specialist assigned to the 249th Military Police Detachment, Camp Humphreys, Pyongtaek-Gun, South Korea.
The Wawasee High School cheerleaders competed in state finals at New Castle’s Chrysler Fieldhouse. The Warrior freshman team tied for fourth, while the varsity team finished 10th.
Warsaw Tigers boys soccer team was honored as Team of the Year at the third annual Michiana Soccer Association Awards dinner in Elkhart. Adam Churchill also was honored as goalkeeper of the year.

In observation of Children’s Book Week Nov. 13-17, Jefferson Elementary School held “Book Character Day,” when the staff dressed up as characters from favorite children’s books: Sheri Bleile, a character from “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”; Barbara Ingold, Cinderella; Carolyn Shaftner, Laura Ingalls Wilder; Kay Kline, Viola Swamp; June Camp, Mother Goose; Staci Smith, Mary and her little lamb; Phyllis Weaver, Ira; Michelle Marshalt, Ramona; Willa Henry, Little Red Riding Hood; and Principal Chris Gensinger, Nate the Great. Pierceton Elementary School is getting into the “moo-oo-ed” to celebrate the week. Posters of animals, along with crates of books in the hallways, entice students to “Pig Out on Knowledge,” “Get in the Reading Moo-oo-ed” and “Don’t Say Baa to Learning.”

Aloysius “Tim” Rovenstine, Atwood, received a trophy during a ceremony at the Women’s Building naming him Kosciusko County’s 1964 Fireman of the Year. Theodore Good, Etna Green, a volunteer fireman for many years, served as master of ceremonies and read a summary of the various activities which attested to Rovenstine’s qualification. Chief Rovenstine retired in 1964 after 18 years of service.
Circulation Manager Jack Knisely presented awards to the outstanding newsboys during 1964, part of National Newspaper Week. Honored were Billy Becker, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Becker, Warsaw; Drake Monce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewayne Monce, Warsaw; Vic Benner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gail Benner, Syracuse; Doug Enyeart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Truman Enyeart, Silver Lake; and Mark Leamon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Leamon, Cromwell.

Barbers of Warsaw increased the price of haircuts to 40 cents under an order from the state barber board. Heretofore various grades of haircuts have cost 20, 25 and 35 cents. Shaves were increased from 15 and 20 cents to 25 cents. While barbers are afraid to disobey the order, it was stated Friday that six barbers oppose the raise and have retained an attorney, believing the order issued to be invalid.
Cole Brothers Circus returned to winter quarters in Rochester after closing in Greenville, Tenn. Officials said 1939 was satisfactory from a financial standpoint until the last 20 days when receipts slumped because of the European war and unstable industrial and agricultural conditions of the south.
