10 Years Ago The Warsaw Breakfast Optimists named Albert “Art” Gakstatter the 2003 Optimist of the Year. He was recognized for his contributions of time and dedication. Gakstatter has been a member since 1993 and currently serves on the board of directors as well as chairing a number of projects throughout the year that serve youth. The Esther Pfleiderer Charitable Trust provided a grant to the Warsaw Community Public Library. The money will be used to purchase a digital microfilm scanner. 25 Years Ago Biomet Inc., Warsaw, has been recognized by the National Association of Investors Corporation as the recipient of the “Growth Company of the Year Award” for 1988 at their Investors Expo in Philadelphia. Dr. Dane Miller presented the award Oct. 27. Wawasee High School will present the musical “Oklahoma” Friday and Saturday in the auditorium. The musical is directed by Karen Parr; assistant director is Cyndi Thornburg; musical director, Steve Bailey; set director, Cindy Bryan. 50 Years Ago Fourteen Kosciusko County students have qualified for scholastic recognition at Indiana University’s Founder’s Day program next May by being named to the dean’s list the first semester of 1963-64: Atwood, Sue Frederich; Claypool, Bernard Hoffman and David Kinsey; Leesburg, Becky Fisher, Christine Rohe, Eileen Vandermark; Mentone, Howard Shoemaker; Milford, Linda Young; North Webster, James Gullett; Pierceton, Jerry Judy; Syracuse, Richard Combs and Thomas Martin; Warsaw, Donn Anderson and Brock Blosser. Mentone High School student council for the 1963-64 school year: Gary Teel and Diana Sarber, freshmen; Jerry Zolman and Georgia Vires, sophomores; Robert Ryman and Sherry Bryan, juniors; Melissa Bechtol and Jim Whetstone, seniors. 75 Years Ago Manchester College opened its 50th year with the coming of the freshmen, Sept. 2. Regular enrollment will be on Monday and Tuesday following. The Rev. J. Harvey Wright, cowboy evangelist, is speaking each evening before capacity crowds at the Church of God, South Buffalo Street. He is a singer of unusual ability and accompanies himself on the guitar. He will tell his life story Wednesday.
