10 Years Ago Recent solar flares caused Northern Lights to be visible around 8 p.m. Thursday over Winona Lake. The display was spectacular but it lasted only about 30 minutes. Summer Zimmer, Winona Lake, won the “Best of Show” award at the Honeywell Center Photography Show, Wabash. She won first in color and third in black and white. Tim Willman, Leesburg, received honorable mention in the color category. The show will be on display until Nov. 16 in the Clark Gallery. Congratulations to Nathan Dirck on earning his first degree Black Belt. 25 Years Ago First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw Potpourri Bazaar, “The Festival of Talents,” will be Dec. 3. A doll house built by John DeVries will be featured in a special silent auction, with bidding to be opened Nov. 6. Marj Sparks donated materials and decorated the doll house which is enjoyed by Susan, 5. Atwood Elementary School completed a successful fund-raising program. Each class had a top salesman and each received a scooter or a portable stereo. Winners are: Brandie Heckaman, Amy Steiner, Chris Chambers, Seth Weaver, Janina Harman, Jeremy Whetstone and J. R. Patino. 50 Years Ago Mrs. Loren Gross is the press relations chairman of the Anthony Nigo chapter, D.A.R. at Mentone. Mrs. Hazel B. Linn is her aunt and assistant. There are 218 students taking beginners typing at Warsaw Community High School. Superintendent Carl Burt says that he hopes all students enroll for a year of typing before they graduate. County Commissioners are Fred Gilliam, Ray Ferverda and Raymond Lash. Among actions taken this month were the approval of a plat on the north side of Little Pike Lake, establishing a speed limit on a county road, and solving an open ditch complaint. 75 Years Ago A pair of twins resisted all efforts to induce breathing at birth until Warsaw firemen applied the department’s resuscitator, alternating the mouthpiece between the two in rapid succession.
