10 Years Ago While most people were relaxing Saturday, a group from Lakeland Christian Academy traveled to Van Wert, Ohio, to help clean up the debris from the Nov. 10 tornado. According to Eric Bowling, LCA dean of student life, seven students and four staff members went to help with the disaster cleanup. The LCA group helped clean up the mess at the movie theater, drive-in and a couple of houses in the area that were destroyed. 25 Years Ago Paul Draper was honored at the Winona Lake Town Board meeting for 12 years of service to the park department. Draper announced his retirement this fall. Presenting the appreciation plaque are members of the park board. Those members include Jim Smelser, Quentin Rupe, Dennis Duncan who is summer activity coordinator, Ted Rondeau and Larry Bair. 50 Years Ago Mike Valentine, Warsaw High School senior, was awarded a $300 scholarship as the first-place winner of the 25th Legion oratorical contest, which was held earlier this week in the new Warsaw High School auditorium. Second place was won by Cynthia Westafer, of Silver Lake, who will receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. Mike’s prize oration was titled “The Constitution, A Challenge Worth Accepting.” Cynthia’s speech was titled “Communism, A Threat To Our Constitution.” 75 Years Ago Carl Cluen, manager of the local Farm Bureau, is attending the Farm Bureau convention, which is being held at the Claypool Hotel, Indianapolis. He was accompanied by Sherman Deaton of Syracuse, Arch DeFries of Milford and Jacob Kern of Claypool. Mrs. Robert Devinney, formerly Inez Galbreath, has resumed her work at the Liberty Cafe after enjoying a two-week honeymoon.
