    AWSA/USA Water Ski has announced the winners of the 1997 Club of the Year Contest. The competition, in its first year of existence, pitted more than 650 eligible clubs from across the United States against each other.

Water Ski Inc., Syracuse, was named the Midwest Region Club of the Year with 2,200 points.

    MUNCIE - Theresa Fisher, Mentone senior, is a member of Ball State University's Wind Ensemble, directed by Roger T. McConnell of the School of Music faculty.

Fisher is the daughter of Harold Fisher, Mentone. She plays the cornet and trumpet in the wind ensemble and is majoring in nursing.

    Five area students at Manchester College are listed in the American College and Universities "Who's Who."

They are: Jon Cullum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Artley D. Cullum, Mentone; Gladden Schrock, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Mark Schrock of Nappanee; Wendell Dilling, son of Mary Dilling and Jan Melvin, son of Lela Melvin, all of North Manchester; and Ralph Bushong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Bushong, Syracuse.

November 16 1932

    Tom D.P. Frazer, doing personal research work into methods to defeat the depression today, inaugurated the practice of writing checks against his bank account upon a post card. Tom typewrites "Pay to order of," etc., on the check and mails it as usual. He avers he saves 2 cents postage over the regular first-class postage charge of 3 cents and also avoids the government bank check tax of 2 cents. Tom's ruling on the matter of avoiding the bank check tax was resolved into the question, "Certainly the government would not put a tax on the government's own mail?"
