10 Years
Because she is the oldest and most experienced on a team filled with underclassmen, Wawasee High School girls basketball coach Kem Zolman calls Tiffany Fick the "grandmother of the group." The 5-foot-9 Fick returns for her senior campaign after scoring 11.7 points per game and pulling down 8.8 rebounds last year for the Warriors. Rachel Canen was last year's leading scorer at 12.5 points per game, but was lost to graduation. Wawasee opens its season Friday, Nov. 11, when they host Westview. Coach Zolman, who 108-52 entering his ninth season with the Warriors, says he is "real pleased with our progress."
25 Years
Akron Carnegie Public Library will hold an open house Sunday, Nov. 11, in honor of its 75th anniversary. The cornerstone of the building was laid on Oct. 28, 1914, with the library completed in October 1915. Movies of Akron and Beaver Dam, taken in 1937 and 1938 by Earl Troutman and Mr. Boyce, will be shown. First Bank of Akron is donating their popcorn wagon. Old photographs will be displayed. Velma Bright is the present librarian/director; staff includes Gloria Bowen, Carol Graham, Jenny Moore and Janet Hawley.
Tamra Payne was chosen to be on the All-America tennis team, becoming the third Warsaw athlete to earn All-America honors: Chanda Kline, basketball, 1978; Claudia Kreicker, basketball, 1980. Tamra was one of four to have a perfect 4.0 GPA.
50 Years
Akron Carnegie Public Library will hold "Open House" Sunday afternoon Oct. 24 in observance of the 50th anniversary of the library moving into the Carnegie building. The building has been remodeled and completely redecorated, with new drapes hung in the basement auditorium. A history of the library has been compiled, with pictures of librarians, assistants and board members from 1912 to the present staff, Velma Bright and Gloria Bowen. Kevin Deardorff, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Deardorff, and Janet Bowen, 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bowen, enjoy the books in the new children's reading center. A memorial plaque to Rose Marine will be unveiled; she left a trust fund to the library on April 24, 1964 in memory of her husband, Clyde. Mrs. Cecil Kuhn, the first librarian, and Mrs. Dessa Fultz, of the first library board, are expected to attend.
75 Years
A set of silverware, awarded by the Lang Furniture Store as the prize in a guessing contest on the weight of a giant loaf of bread, went to Mrs. Charles Summy, of Warsaw. The loaf weighed 16 pounds, 12 ounces. Mrs. Summy and Mary Mollenhour, of Mentone, both guessed 17 pounds. The winner was determined by lot by disinterested parties. A total of 400 guesses were submitted.
Earl Stouder, member of the Nappanee 4-H club, was awarded grand showmanship contest honors Oct. 22 at the Elkhart County 4-H club fair in Goshen. He was presented with a trophy, a mounted gold figure of a cow. Exhibitor of the grand champion Holstein beef calf was Ned Blosser of the Syracuse club.
