    WINONA LAKE - The Grace College women's basketball team is doing things that people around Winona Lake haven't seen in quite some time.

The Lady Lancers won their season opener for the first time in seven years with a 15-point win over Judson. Earlier, Grace beat Tri-State, ending a nine-game losing streak to the Thunder dating back to the 1983-84 season.

    Pamela Maurer, a Winona Lake co-ed, has been chosen as one of five candidates for the 1983 Greenville College Homecoming queen.

A daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Maurer, Winona Lake, she is a senior at Greenville, majoring in elementary education.

    Howard "Sam" Holbrook, Warsaw cigar store operator, became the first Democrat to be elected Kosciusko County sheriff in 50 years.

A total of 15,894 county voters went to the polls - a big 71 percent of the registration of 22,347. This is believed to be a modern record vote in this county for an "off-year" election.

    ROCHESTER - Rev. M.W. Crider, pastor of the Methodist Church at Leiters Ford, 10 miles west of here, has announced that during his evening service Sunday he will offer for sale at auction a 13-year-old boy.

The minister makes the stipulation that all bidders must notify him of their intention to submit bids prior to the hour of the service. He states that there is no joke attached to the offer.
