On Oct. 6 a pumpkin grown by Geneva Emmons, formerly of Mentone, set a new world record at 1,262 pounds. The pumpkin was weighed at Hoffman Dairy Garden, Canby, Ore. Geneva and her husband, Don, spent the first years of their lives in Mentone. They have extended family and many friends in the Warsaw area. They now live in Sammamish, Wash.

The Marketplace of Warsaw held a grand opening celebration last week, and helping cut the giant ribbon were Warsaw Mayor Jeff Plank, Andy Smith, executive vice president and general partner of Horizon group, the shopping center developer; and Jean and Bill Bibler, local developer. The 200,000-square-foot shopping center is anchored by Fisher Big Wheel, Uhlman’s Department Store, Tepe’s Catalog Showroom and J.C. Penney, the latter to open in early 1987.

Dona Kay Van Gilder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Van Gilder, of Mentone, has been appointed a member of the staff of the campus radio station (WMIB) at Manchester College. She will serve as an engineer during the 1961-62 school year. Dona Kay is a freshman at Manchester, majoring in pre-med.

Members of the school milk fund organization, under auspices of the Elks Lodge, today began their drive to procure funds to buy milk for undernourished school children. The committee is composed of Chairman Raymond Neff, Mayor C.C. DuBois, Louis Breading, Leolin (Bud) Moons, Roscoe Diddel, Dick Beroth and Reuben Williams.
