10 Years Ago Wawasee senior Rachel Stichter, running with a stress fracture in her foot, finished second in Saturday’s state meet in Terre Haute. “I’m very proud of Rachel,” said Coach Grace Stichter, Rachel’s aunt. In her prep career, she has competed in the state meet four times, won the Northern Lakes Conference championship four times, the sectional four times, the regional four times and the semistate once. Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy started its 12th year. The current class has 27 members, including the first students from Lakeland Christian Academy. 25 Years Ago Triton elementary, junior high and high school students are presenting the “Wizard of Oz” Nov. 10, 11 and 12 at the Bourbon High School auditorium. Max Courtney, Mutual Federal Savings Bank, was named associate member of the year by the Builders Association of Kosciusko County. Courtney has served on the board of directors, VIP, site selection and Parade of Homes committees and as parade marshal. Clint and Linda Olson have opened “Olson’s” in the old North Webster Theatre next to the fire station. The store will feature carpets, custom furniture and kitchen cabinets. Michell Munson, who works in housewares, was chosen associate of the store for October at the Warsaw Big Wheel. 50 Years Ago Syracuse Rubber Products Co., 500 S. Huntington St., has made steady growth since locating there in 1946. The firm manufactures rubber goods used in electrical appliances, automotive, toys and home water systems. There is a dispute between commissioners and councilmen on whether to keep the courthouse dome and repair it or remove the dome and save the money. Commissioner Fred Gilliam reports a woman taking a tour said “it would be a shame to remove it.” Leading characters in the Warsaw High School Senior Class play are Huckleberry Finn, Norman Weirick; Jim, Ken Fish; Tom Sawyer, Pat Valentine. Mrs. Herbert Petrie directs. 75 Years Ago A movement is being urged for the circulation of a petition to the proper authorities asking for the construction of a sidewalk on East Winona Avenue to extend from Scott Street to the tracks of the Big Four Railroad. This street handles more traffic than any other with the exception of Center Street (Lincoln Highway), but the pavement is only 18 feet in width and in the absence of a sidewalk pedestrians are compelled to wind their way through auto traffic. Robert Gast, Warsaw High School senior, captured the junior tennis title when he downed Curtis Garber in the finals, 6-2, 9-7. Betty Pottenger won the girls title by stopping Jean Thomas in the finals, 6-0, 6-3.
