The names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 51st annual National Merit Scholarship Program have been announced. Among those are three local students: Anna Marie Klatt and Lauren W. Cooper, both of Warsaw Community High School, and Katharine G. Harris, of Lakeland Christian Academy. These seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,200 Merit Scholarship Awards that will be offered next spring. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout the high school years. More than 1.3 million juniors in nearly 21,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2006 National Merit Program by taking the 2004 Preliminary/SAT Qualifying Test. Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state.
