Lakeview Middle School students spent Friday, Sept. 30, on "The Voyage of Discovery," learning teamwork, leadership, communication and strategy through activities such as relay races in canoes and academic leap-frog. Both 7th and 8th-graders came together and were divided into two groups; one group participated in five activities at LMS, the other started their day at Winona Lake Beach Park in another five events. After coming together for lunch at the park, the two groups switched locations and completed the activities. LMS teacher Dan Wray was in charge. Each student received a t-shirt designed by art teacher Dawn Strand.

Gary Chen, a senior at Whitko High School, son of Charles and Janet Chen, South Whitley, is a semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Chen received 1,500 out of a possible 1,600 points in the math and verbal examination. He is now eligible to win one of the 6,000 national scholarships to be granted next spring. Two other Whitko students received letters of commendation for their scores: Kevin Harter, son of Jack and Linda Harter, Pierceton, and Bevin Niemann, daughter of Jim and Dove Tippert, Columbia City.
Warsaw Community High School art teacher Sara Robbins was among 150 teachers representing 30 states enrolled in a Teacher Institute at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The aim is to provide inspiration and creativity in the classroom.

Warsaw High School cage coach Ralph (Boag) Johnson ran the cross-country team in the absence of mentor Howard Bock, who has returned from a driver training education course at the University of Kentucky.
Eileen Vandermark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Condict Vandermark, Route 2, Leesburg, and a senior at the Indiana University School of Music, will present an organ recital, Sunday, Sept. 12, at the First Methodist Church of Warsaw. She has studied organ for eight years and plans to continue her studies toward a Master of Music degree in Sacred music. Last April, at a convention in Salt Lake City, she was privileged to play the organ at the Mormon Tabernacle.

North Webster High School's nattily uniformed band, directed by Miss Doris Bowers, was one of the crack organizations which played for Wendell Willkie, presidential candidate, at his acceptance ceremonies at Elwood, Ind. August 17. Hannah Jane Himes, drum major; Maxine Hamman, baton twirler; Gloria Witmer and Florence Werner, flagbearers.
George DeBolt, Warsaw, was the winner in Sharp Hardware's guessing contest. He was awarded a Priscilla coffee maker for guessing nearest to the number of holes in the Priscilla coffee basket. His guess was 4,408; actual figure 4,418.
