When tornadoes ripped through Warsaw last week, Grace College opened its doors to students, staff and citizens as it always does during an alert. When the administration heard about the damage caused by the twisters, though, they provided a buffet for cleanup crews and gave more than one-third of the future Student Recreation Center (the former Medtronic Sofamor Danek building) to Da-Lite Screen Co. for warehouse space and shipping.

Ryan Wiehler, with a fourth-place finish here Saturday in the Manchester High School cross-country semistate, will be Warsaw’s lone representative for next week’s state finals on the South Ridge Golf Course in Indianapolis. Wiehler will share area running honors with Manchester’s Eric Underwood.

50 Years Ago

All Confederate money in Timothy Martin’s display has been handed down in his family along with keepsakes of an ancestor who fought with the South Carolina Volunteers. The paper bills are for $5, $10, $20 and $50. There was also a half-dime dated 1861. Tim won first prize in the junior division of a South Bend Coin club show. First place in the senior division went to R.E. Danield, president of the Warsaw Coin Club, who displayed 140 Civil War tokens.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sharp returned to their home, on South Buffalo Street, from Bloomington, Ind., where they went to be with their daughter, Bernice, and Miss Ednah Bowler, who was badly injured Sunday evening in an automobile accident. It will be three weeks before the girls will be able to be removed to Warsaw. They are in a Bloomington hospital.
