10 Years Ago Saturday may have been a bit gloomy outdoors, but volunteers from Carpenters Union 651 were working to spread a bit of sunshine fo a Mentone girl. Melissa Wert, 9, the daughter of Steven and Sue Wert of Mentone, was chosen by Make-a-Wish of Indiana to have her wish granted and, although she would have liked to have her own bedroom at her house, Make-A-Wish cannot build additions on existing structures. So, the Mentone Elementary school third-grader asked for her second best wish – to have her own playhouse. 25 Years Ago Pat Teeple, dressed as a clown, handed out some goodies to one of several hundred people that turned out for the trick-or-treat party arranged in Warsaw’s downtown business district Friday night. Laura and Erin Pelz also got into the Halloween spirit. Dressed as bunnies, the 14-month old twins were escorted by their mother, Susan, and were also treated to a bit of popcorn. 50 Years Ago Town Tattler – Frank Firestone, veteran Warsaw taxi driver, believes he has driven equivalent to four round trips to the moon (2 million miles) since he’s been driving cabs. Frank started driving taxi back in Model T and A days (1934). .... Fellow Rotarians are betting on their entry, Bruce Howe, to capture Tri Kappa Sorority Red Stocking Maharajah title. Winner will be in charge of harem at revue. Rotarian “buddies” contend there is only one man in town who could manage a harem and this is Howe. How right. 75 Years Ago At their annual Halloween entertainment, the Fraternal Order of Eagles gave prizes to the following contestants in the masquerade: Mrs. Otto Phillpott, Mrs. Earl Loy, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. William Petro, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Berkev, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Curtis, Mrs. Ferd Chapman, Mrs. Delores Butler, Mrs. Jack Dobbins and Mrs. Richard Dramon. About 250 members and wives or lady friends enjoyed a floor show and dance after the judges had decided upon the prize winners.
