The Warsaw Pilots' Association presented educational grants to Curt Watson and Robert Haggard, both seniors at Purdue University majoring in aviation management. Their studies include a minor in aviation flight technology.

    Jeffrey Klinefelter, award-winning Etna Green artist, is displaying his work at the 22nd Annual Indiana Wildlife Artists Exhibit at the Mount Memorial Art Gallery on the Grace College campus through Nov. 5. Other local artists are Laura Hill of North Webster and Tom Willman of Leesburg.

    Jamie Widman and Brittany Burgess, Lakeland Christian Academy, were named to the Northern Indiana Soccer All-Conference team.

25 Years

LaraBeth Carter, Leesburg Elementary third-grade student and daughter of Ted and Jan Carter, Oswego, was a third-place winner in an essay contest about mothers, which was sponsored by Family Circle magazine.

    Warsaw senior Chuck Oldham holds up the Northern Lakes Conference trophy as the Tigers were the undisputed champions with a 6-0 league record, the first title for the Tigers since 1982, earned after Warsaw beat Concord at Fisher Field, Friday night, Oct. 12. The defense made life tough for the Minutemen, winning 17-7.

    Kosciusko County Coroner John Sadler was elected by the other 91 coroners in Indiana as a board member of the Indiana Coroner's Association.

50 Years

Warsaw High School's cross country team defends its title in the meet at Plymouth Oct. 6: Tom Kelty, Dennis Schooley, Tim Miner, Terry Sumpter, Mike Longenecker, George Cornelius, Max Mock, Ron Longenbaugh, Ron Yeiter. Howard Bock, coach.

    Jim McCleary, son of Dr. and Mrs. Virgil A. McCleary, North Bay Dr., is a member of the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., golf team for the third straight year. He will be commissioned after graduation from Purdue University. He will be in Chicago for the Air Force/ Army football game Nov. 6 and will visit Warsaw.

    Dr. Jack Clark presented Life Scout awards to Dan Van Lue, Terry Miller and Dan Jetmore of Syracuse Boy Scout Troop 28. Scouts must earn 10 merit badges first.

75 Years

New prices on coal, established under the Guffey Coal Bill recently adopted by Congress, are now in effect in Warsaw, varying from 25 to 65 cents, depending on the grade purchased. The jump was due to the price increase at the mines. The Guffey bill, passed in 1937, sets a minimum price for each grade of coal. After revamping the bill, the minimum bituminous coal prices for 1940 showed an average increase of 11 cents per ton over levels set in 1937, a local dealer stated.

    Etna Green downed Burket, 12 to 8, Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 1, in softball. Lamoine Parker opposed Carlysle Grimm on the mound, but a freshman flinger, who relieved Grimm in the box for Etna Green, was the winning pitcher.
