Edgewood Middle School 7th grade volleyball team won the Westview Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Tigers went 5-0 on the day with wins over Westview, Concord, Argos, Garrett and Eastside.

    Rozella Ford Golf Course league champions: Dave Smolen, Fred Hummitch, Andy Beno, Kent Scholl, Gary Thornsberry, Dick Palmer, Sean Hartle and Claude Robinson. More than 150 people participated this season.

    Warsaw Community Development Corporation director Carmen Lock announced Oct. 18 that the WCDC would relocate to 117A W. Center St. from their current location on Market St.

25 Years

Lt. and Mrs. Arthur Mills have been appointed as corps officers of The Salvation Army. They will arrive in Warsaw Tuesday, Oct. 9, along with their son, Arthur, 17, from an outpost in Minneapolis, Minn. They will replace Capt. and Mrs. Ken Locke, who resigned in August. Brigadier Mrs. Sophie Benton has been in charge during the interim period.

    Kenny Shepherd, Winona Lake, a member of the Warsaw Fire Department since August 1981 and previously a volunteer at Winona Lake for 12 years, has been appointed by Mayor Jeff Plank to be the new Warsaw fire chief effective today, Oct. 8. "Being chief as always been one of my goals. I appreciate the mayor giving me this opportunity." Shepherd was named Winona Lake Fireman of the Year in 1980, Kosciusko County Fireman of the Year in 1986 and is a member of the county's Squad 70 fire investigation team.

50 Years

David Bushong, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bushong, Route 1, Syracuse, was recently presented the coveted Eagle Scout award by Troop 28 Scoutmaster John Van Lue. He received 21 merit badges to attain this honor.

    Mrs. Kathleen Long's kindergarten class at Leesburg School: Krista Powers, Robert Susan, Lisa Opperud, David Baker, Daniel Ashton, Ricky Timmons, Jeffery Haines, James Borders, Randall Reichard and Mikel Neer.

    Steve Shand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Shand, Atwood, grew a 70-pound pumpkin. The other seven he harvested were over 35 pounds.

75 Years

In a well-played game, the Claypool Knights stopped Mentone, 4 to 3, Monday afternoon, Sept. 30, in a tilt at Claypool, and the defeat ousted the Bulldogs from the running for the high school softball title of the county. Claypool had eliminated Sidney, and Mentone advanced to the second round by whipping Burket. The Knights thus worked their way into the finals of the southern division. Batteries: Paul Horn and John Tucker for Mentone; Delbert Price and Owen Ranstead for Claypool.

    Girl Scouts of Warsaw and Winona Lake will attend their respective church services, in uniform, Sunday morning, October 27, commemorating the birthday anniversary of Juliette Low, who founded the Girl Scouts in the U.S. in 1912.
