10 Years Ago For many people, physical education conjures up memories of droopy uniforms, sitting on the sidelines waiting to be picked last, and embarrassing showers. Kids who were not athletic often spent time agonizing over how soon they would mess up and be mercifully taken out of the game. The old focus was on athletic skill. That focus often sidelined many children who needed physical activity the most. The new physical education programs are beginning to focus more on fitness and workouts that will last a lifetime. At Warsaw Community High School, teacher Scott Erba is initiating new programs for his students to expand their physical education choices. 25 Years Ago Warsaw Community Schools will unveil Indiana’s only traveling science classroom Oct. 31 at the First National Bank parking lot on downtown Warsaw’s courthouse square. The traveling classroom, similar to a motor home, will be used for Warsaw’s “Science on Wheels” program. The vehicle was purchased with state gifted/talented exemplary/innovative grant funds earmarked for elementary science instruction improvement. A full-time science teacher, Dan Wray, will drive the vehicle between Warsaw Community Schools’ eight elementaries in Warsaw, Winona Lake, Atwood, Claypool, Silver Lake and Leesburg. 50 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Gunter, of Road 30 West, spent their vacation last week in New York City. Mr. Gunter is employed at Zimmers and Mrs. Gunter is a teacher in the North Webster school. Mr. and Mrs. Byron Linn and daughters, Nancy and Peggy, of Warsaw, recently went to Bloomington and Brown County. Peggy is a freshman at Indiana University. 75 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Lon Cassel, of Warsaw, will leave on Monday for a three-week trip through the West where they will visit with friends and relatives in Kansas City and Denver. Chester Copeland, L.E. Thorne and Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Bibler of Warsaw attended the football game Saturday at Notre Dame.
