    The most recent additions to the Warsaw Police Dept., Greg Oberlin and Scott D. Whitaker, are serving the community where they grew up.

Oberlin and Whitaker were hired in 1997 with funds obtained through grants from the federal and state governments.

October 22 1982

    The highest honor of Scottish Rite Freemasonry was conferred on Gene B. Lee, Warsaw, recently in the St. Louis Scottish Rite Cathedral. The degree conferred climaxed the annual session of the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite for the 15 northeastern and midwestern states, comprising the 490,000-member Northern Jurisdiction of the United States.

October 22 1957

    John Bennett, 18, local amateur radio operator, told reporters that he heard the Russian satellite transmitting signals on band 20 of his receiving set on two different occasions - at 1:41 p.m. and 10 a.m. He said the signal, with speed variations, lasted approximately 14 minutes on each occasion. Bennett, who resides at 1113 E. Fort Wayne St., said all "ham" operators have been requested to send reports of any signals they receive on "Sputnik" to FCC in Washington, D.C. John is a freshman at Manchester College.


75 Years Ago

October 22 1932

    A large crowd of spectators was on hand at the W.O. Wehrly farm in Van Buren Township, where oil was recently struck, to see workers shoot the well. There was much excitement caused during the early part of the forenoon when oil began bubbling through the pipes. The Kosana Oil Co., of which most of the stockholders reside in Kosciusko and Elkhart counties, has about 20,000 acres of land under lease in the vicinity of the Wehrly farm, proclaimed to be of the character of that under which valuable oil deposits are found.
