On Sunday, Sept. 23, members of Bourbon's First United Church of Christ celebrate the 150th anniversary of the church's founding. The James Parks family of Bourbon County, Kentucky, came in 1836 and built a log building to be used as a church and for other public meetings. Rev. H.L. Lord, of Rochester, was called as pastor of a new church built in 1840. A brick church was built in 1878 on the site of the school building but was razed in 1913 to allow for construction of the present building. Rev. Billy Sunday preached on June 25, 1913 when the cornerstone was laid. The pioneer Parks-Ganshorn Cemetery, near the original church, has been cleared by volunteers this past year.

Filling station operator, Boyd (Isaac) Walton, snagged a giant ten and three-quarter pound channel catfish at the south end of Pike Lake Aug. 6, taking more than 20 minutes of wrestling in total darkness before pulling the fish into his boat. The fish was caught by casting on a “jitterbug” artificial plug. It measured exactly 30 inches long when exhibited at the Times and Union office.
