    Bugs Bunny and Elvis might be more popular, but a commemorative stamp featuring the supersonic X-1 aircraft is a big hit in Mentone.

The town is all abuzz with the unveiling of a stamp honoring the 50th anniversary of the X-1, the first plane to break the sound barrier. The historical event of Oct. 14, 1947, can be traced to Mentone, home of aviation pioneer Lawrence Bell, who designed the aircraft.

    Tim Hawley, tool and die maker at DePuy, recently attained journeyman status by completing a four-year, 8,000-hour apprentice program certified by the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Hawley is a 1978 graduate of Warsaw Community High School and resides in Warsaw with his wife, Debbie.

    Larry McKinley, a junior at Manchester College, is one of five cheerleaders elected by the student body to serve during the 1957-58 school year. McKinley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ora L. McKinley, Mentone. He is a graduate of Mentone High School. A business major, he is also sports editor this year of the college annual.

    Mrs. H.C. Kelly, of East Main Street, sent to The Times office a vase full of the finest dahlias ever seen in this part of the country. Very large, perfect, and of various colors, this sample of dahlias cannot be surpassed in beauty. Kelly will accept the thanks of The Times.
