His parents, Dan and Marilyn, live in Atwood. 25 Years Ago Superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools Dr. Larry Crabb was the top bidder for the 33-acre tract of the Helen Freeman Estate adjacent to the rear of Madison Elementary School, 201 N. Union St. A new bus pick-up and drop-off will be developed with a circular drive where the Freeman house presently stands. Plans are to sell the 1920s-era house to the highest bidder who will move the structure from the property. The PTO has requested that a gym be built on some of the land. Junior Nelson Copeland and Krista Stone, senior, were crowned Whitko homecoming king and queen at Friday’s football game. U.S. Congressman John Hiler presented an American flag that flew over the White House to Warsaw resident Tommy Truong and his family. Truong escaped from Vietnam 10 years ago; his wife, Kim, and three children, escaped this year. The family reunited in Warsaw in July. 50 Years Ago Kent R. Gardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Gardner, Spring Hill Acres, Warsaw, was presented with the “Dress Blue Winner” and “Outstanding Marine” awards for his platoon at graduation services of the U.S. Marine Corps. Boot Camp at Parris Island, S.C. Sept. 3. A week earlier, he had won the camp’s boxing championship. Jack Kelley, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kelley, Warsaw, will be in uniform Sept. 26 when the Indiana University football team opens its season with Northwestern in Bloomington. Jack is a fullback on the I.U. roster. His uncle, attorney John Widaman, was an outstanding end for Indiana during the 1930s. 75 Years Ago “Miss Warsaw” of 1939 is Katie Ann Worley, 19, daughter of Opal Worley. She is a graduate of Warsaw High School, class of 1937, and is employed by the Western Union. Agnes Jane Snyder, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Snyder, Silver Lake, and a graduate of Silver Lake High School, is runner-up. Ann Hover, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hover, reached the final round. She will graduate from Warsaw High School this year. Mary White and Betty Hart reached the finals. Worley was sponsored by Hub Clothing Company. Four years ago this month, Warsaw’s first beauty queen, Geneva Thorn, was crowned. She, too, was sponsored by the Hub Clothing Company. She is a local beautician.
