    Dustin Pifer, Claypool, has been selected as one of five national winners in the Sleep Research Society 1997 Essay Awards Program.

As a first-prize winner, Pifer received $250 for his essay "Eating During Nocturnal Somnambulism." The essay was selected based on content, scientific application and originality.

    Ricky J. Addair, Warsaw, is among 14 Indiana National Guardsmen selected to receive the Indianapolis Star/News Military Achievement Award this year.

Each year 14 outstanding enlisted individuals from the Army and Air National Guard are selected by their units to receive the awards given by the two Indianapolis newspapers.

October 17 1957

    John R. Stookey, of Leesburg, won top honors in the junior division of the International Dairy Show in Chicago with the showing of his 2-year-old Holstein cow, "Perkins Promise Walker Lad." Stookey, a former outstanding high school basketball player at Leesburg, was judged top showman in the 4-H club livestock show at the 1956 Kosciusko County fair. He graduated from Leesburg last spring.

    Mary Burt, who receives The Times at Silver Lake, is 84 years old. In a note to the editor, written in a very legible handwriting, she says, "I can't remember the day my father didn't take The Indianian, and then my husband, so you see, it is like one of the family. I will enjoy it as long as I get it. May the Lord add His blessing."
