10 Years Ago At a recent Warsaw Community Schools administrators meeting, “Superman” encouraged donations for the United Way. Randy Polston, Harrison Elementary principal, flew in and was greeted by Lois Lane (WCHS Principal Dr. Jennifer Brumfield) and Daily Planet scoop writer Jimmy Olsen (intern Randy Dahms). Rock Bottom Warehouse will donate a 31-inch color TV for the campaign. Dr. David McGuire, superintendent of Warsaw Schools, and Sandra Hess, assistant, volunteered to wash and wax the lucky winner’s car. The drawing will be Nov. 5. This year’s South Whitley Fall Festival takes place Oct. 8-10 with the theme “Family, Fun and Friends: Celebrating 30 Festival Years.” 25 Years Ago Kosciusko County’s new promotional banners are in place around the county, but several residents have stated that they are difficult to read, especially from a car. Construction on the new Bob Evans Restaurant near U.S. 30 and adjacent to Center Center is underway. Rick Neff, Neff Masonry, Syracuse, worked on the facility scheduled to open in February 1990. Mayor Jeff Plank said the extension of water and sewer lines and de-mucking the site held up the summer opening. 50 Years Ago Capt. Charles A. Hollar, Route 3, Warsaw, completed a six-week Army medical officer basic course at the Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He received his degree in dentistry in 1964 from Indiana University. Syracuse Explorer Scout Troop 28 won second place in the American Junior Bowling Congress. Other participants were Richard Maresh, Mike Kern, Ronnie Hostetter, Ralph Stahley, Robert Folger and Jay Spry. Ernest and Pat Kelly, 321 N. Cook St., will accompany their son Michael to Indianapolis where he will be a fourth-year student at John Herron Art School. Sept. 23 through March,1965, the Warsaw Kiwanis Club will begin its fifth season of sponsoring Travelogues at the Winona Lake Auditorium. James Durham is publicity chairman. 75 Years Ago Police Officer Robert “Link” Hay received instructions in the operation of Daily Times speed graphic and telephoto news cameras by photographer Bill Mollenhour. The newspaper supplies Chief Neff with pictures of automobile accidents and portraits of arrested characters charged with serious crime. Donkey baseball will again be held in Warsaw July 25 at the athletic field. Dignified businessmen will mount the creatures and pit their riding and ball-playing abilities against members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, also on donkeys. Players will be riding Mae West, Uncle Willy, Pop Eye, Joe Louis, Hitler, Mussolini, Olive Oyl, Jack Benny, Jesse James, Andy Gump and Groucho Marx.
