The Kosciusko County Firefighters Association plans to provide a smoke detector and battery for approximately 15,000 homes over the next few months in a door-to-door campaign. The detectors are free and firemen will install them. “There have been five fire-related deaths in the county this year,” firefighter Kevin Bell said. “None of the homes had a working smoke detector.”

Kosciusko County’s bridges rank as some of the best overall in the surrounding area, according to a private bridge inspector who works in part for the state. Jerry Mohajeri, a bridge inspector and engineer for MHM Associates Inc., South Bend, praised the county for maintaining structurally sound bridges and for maximizing funds spent on bridge repairs and replacements. In addition to the 81 bridges already inspected, several more will be reviewed in the near future. Mohajeri listed six bridges that he determined needing replacement, but noted none of the bridges are in critical need of repair.

The Atwood FFA Land Judging Team won third place in the district land judging contest held recently near LaGrange. The team is made up of Randy Swanson, Bob Ryman, Bill Haney and Jerry Ryman. This is the quartet that won second place in the recent county contest.

Lawrence Baker, local employee of the Western Union, went to Notre Dame Saturday, where he will work with Western Union covering the game between Notre Dame and Washington University of St. Louis. Among those going with him today were Ben Detterman and Robert Baker, local high school football players.
