10 Years AgoMiller's Merry Manor's aviary was completed Sept. 8 for all residents to enjoy. A variety of fundraisers was used - car washes, bake sales and dunk tanks, among others. Families of residents also donated."We wanted to get the bird aviary to brighten the residents day," said James Schmidt, Miller's Merry Manor administrator. "Most elderly folk do enjoy plants and birds and things."25 Years AgoThis recipe is from the Spotlight Recipe Contest for Chocolate-Oatmeal Cake.1-1/2 cups boiling water; 1 cup instant oatmeal; 1 cup brown sugar; 1 cup white sugar; 1/2 cup shortening or oil; 2 eggs; 1 tbsp. cocoa; 1 tsp. salt; 1 tsp. soda; 1-1/2 cups flour. Pour boiling water over oatmeal. Let stand for 10 minutes. Cream sugars and shortening. Add to oatmeal. Add remaining ingredients. Pour batter in a greased 13x9 pan. Sprinkle 6 oz. chocolate chips on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. He plays bass drum in the Marching Hundred. Bill earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Arizona.75 Years AgoEnrollment in Kosciusko County rural schools, all outside of Warsaw, show a loss this year as against last year of 124 pupils. The total enrollment in all the high schools and grade schools in 1934 and 1935 was 5,025 as against 4,901 enrolled as of September 6, 1935. The number enrolled this year is 1,984 high school pupils, and 2,917 grade school pupils.
