10 Years AgoWhile Warsaw is celebrating its 125th anniversary as a city, some area businesses are even older. The oldest business in the county in continuous operation since its founding (and operated by the same family that started it) is, of course, the Times-Union.Lake City Bank also is older than the city, starting in 1872, and is the third oldest state-chartered bank in Indiana.25 Years AgoThe Warsaw American Legion Post 49 Color Guard finished second among nine color guards recently in the field competition in the American Legion Department of Indiana State Convention. Post 49 finished only .5 points behind Fort Wayne Post 296, which finished first and is now recognized as state champions for 1985.50 Years AgoThe county jail here in Warsaw was probably the only one boasting a wading pool in the basement. Sheriff Sam Holbrook discovered it, recently when he went down to find out why no hot water was available. Seems an old water heater, in service 14 years, had sprung a leak during the night and the basement floor was flooded to the depth of four inches. Everything's OK now. A new heater was installed and, after considerable back-breaking labor, the basement was pumped dry.75 Years AgoA communication was presented to the city council by city attorney Everett E. Rasor which had been received from members of the Warsaw board of education asking that the city council authorize the board to issue $5,000 worth of bonds for the purchase of property from the Big Four railroad for the new athletic field.
