10 Years Ago The congregation of Warsaw First Christian Church will celebrate the church's 150th birthday Sunday, July 1. Ronnie Sams is the congregation's current minister since 1989. Dan Beam is the music minister since 1991. Tim Grasham is the youth/associate minister since 1999 and Scott Smiley is the children's minister since November. A catered meal will be provided at the Center Lake Pavilion. Following dinner there is a sesquicentennial service in the pavilion featuring brief talks from former ministers of the church including: Paul Boden, Lee Bracey, Ed Erskin, Mike Bratten and Marilyn Pitzer.
25 Years Ago This recipe won first place in the Spotlight Strawberry Festival Recipe Contest for Straw-Berried Treasure. 1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs; 1/4 cup sugar; 1/3 cup butter; 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese; 1/4 cup sugar; 2 tbsp. milk; 3-1/2 cups Cool Whip; 2 pints or 1 quart strawberries halved; 2 pkgs. (4 serve) or 1 pkg. (6 serve) vanilla-instant pudding, (regular or sugar free); 3-1/2 cups cold milk. Combine crumbs, 1/4 cup sugar and melted butter. Press into a 13'x9' pan. Chill. Beat cream cheese with 1/4 cup sugar and 2 tbsp. milk until smooth. Fold in half of the whipped topping. Spread over crust. Arrange berries in layer. Using 3-1/2 cups milk, prepare pudding as directed. Pour over berries and chill several hours or overnight. Shortly before serving, spread remaining whipped topping over pudding. 50 Years Ago Mrs. Charles Berman, of the Beaver Dam community, reports she had almost given up hope of seeing her blue parakeet again when a car from a Claypool resident reunited the bird and its owner. The bird had been missing several days. Somehow it got into a chicken pen miles away on a Claypool farm. The finder heard that WRSW had broadcast a "lost parakeet" notice and got in touch with Mrs. Berman. The bird, a pet of the Berman family for eight years, has recovered from its frightening adventure and is talking freely again.
75 Years Ago Grass fires in the vicinity of Warsaw and Milford threatened the surrounding country. Saturday afternoon just south of Milford the Milford Fire Department responded when a string of box cars was threatened by a fire which burned over a quarter of a mile of territory. Insurance agents said Monday that special care should be taken by farmers in carrying lanterns or in the use of matches. The past week, several serious farm fires occurred on account of the dry weather.
