10 Years Ago A record number of participants showed up for Saturday's eighth annual City of Lakes Triathlon at Winona Lake Park. A total of 373 participants competed in the .25-mile swim, 13.5-mile bike ride and 3-mile run. Winona Lake's Scott Erba, who set the course record in 1999, was the overall winner with a time of 57 minutes, 7 seconds. Ryan Shanahan of Muncie was the runner-up with his time of 57:39.
25 Years Ago If you decide to purchase any "jam shorts" with a P-Jammies brand name on it, you'll know it may have been designed by Warsaw Community High School graduate Cindy Hathaway. P-Jammies is a brand of clothing designed by the 25-year-old Hathaway. She works for Breaker, which is a subsidiary for the Los Angeles company Clothing Connections. Cindy currently lives in Los Angeles and is the daughter of Kay Parrett and Loyal Hathaway, both of Warsaw.
50 Years Ago When the Children's Parade is held Friday night at the North Webster Mermaid festival, "Miss Cutie" of 1952 - Vicki Silveus of Warsaw - will be leading the way. Cutie king and queen and children's parade chairman, Mrs. Hannah Payne, North Webster, announced today that Vicki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James (Mac) Silveus, Warsaw, will not only lead the parade but will also crown "Miss Cutie of 1961" in the king and queen contest that follows.
75 Years Ago According to a Warsaw city official, five employees of the regular street department force made better and faster repairs in the same length of time on Warsaw streets the past week than the WPA setup of 50 men. Among streets leveled in which holes were filled were Prairie, Jefferson, South Columbia, North Indiana, and drives at the Center Lake Park. Visitors to the East Clark Street sewer, which has been under construction for many weeks by WPA labor, report that of the 30 men, two men have to do most of the digging and laying of tile.
