10 Years Ago In North Webster, the late Homer Shoop was an untiring promoter of the Mermaid Festival, which celebrates its 56th anniversary this year. Shoop was a banker, internationally known tennis champion and contract bridge player, and North Webster was his home away from home. He was instrumental in establishing the Palace of Sports Youth Foundation, which will distribute more than $100,000 in scholarships and contributions this year. 25 Years Ago Telephone operators will become a thing of the past at United Telephone here after Friday. A new computer system will replace the operators. "Old operators never die, they just lose their connections," is one of the many sayings posted above the switchboard at United Telephone in downtown Warsaw. The new system is supposed to be able to handle more calls faster and more efficiently. The changes will affect Warsaw and Pierceton residents, but customers will notice few changes. 50 Years Ago Chuck Yeager and Miss Rosalind Bristow, of Warsaw, were among the 157 young people who received degrees at the Hanover College commencement earlier this week. Chuck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Yeager, majored in business, has accepted a position with an insurance firm in Indianapolis. Miss Bristow, who made the Dean's List for outstanding scholastic achievement her senior year, will teach eighth-grade history classes and senior English classes at Stockbridge, Mich. 75 Years Ago Robert Delp, George Phillips, Forrest Hoffer, Paul Vermillion, Joe Paxton, Harold Derry, Ralph Boice and Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Lambdin have left for Chicago. They will attend a party Saturday given by the Lambda Chi Omega sorority at its national convention, which is being held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Drake Hotel.
