10 Years Ago Warsaw Community High School announced its valedictorian for the 2001 graduating class is Hillary Barlow and salutatorian is Kimberly Keyes. Barlow will graduate with a grade point average of 13.42 on a 12-point scale. She is the daughter of Bruce and Christi Barlow, Winona Lake. She plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University, where she will major in nursing. Keyes is the daughter of Jerry and Caren Keyes, Warsaw. She will graduate with a GPA of 13.09 and will major in English education at Grace College. 25 Years Ago Sprinkles and overcast weather didn’t put a damper on area residents’ participation in the national Hands Across America effort Sunday. According to organizers, Indiana was the only state along the national chain that encountered any rain but local residents who joined hands didn’t care. More than 1,000 people from the county joined hands along the one mile stretch on Ind. 331, north of U.S. 30. Cindy Felger organized the one-mile stretch for Kosciusko County residents. 50 Years Ago David Born, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Born, Bourbon, will receive a master’s degree in forestry from Purdue University June 4. Next day he and his wife, Mary Anne, leave by car for Juneau, Alaska, where he will be associated with the Alaska Forest Research Center, a branch of the U.S. Forest Service. 75 Years Ago Clarence Wertenberger of Pierceton believed that he has raised the first ripe tomato of the season in Kosciusko County. He reports to The Times that he picked a ripe tomato from the plant in his garden recently and expects to have several more ripe ones soon. This plant was planted a little over a month ago and is not a hot-house plant.
