10 Years AgoThe students of Akron Elementary School enjoyed a "Concert in the Gym" for reaching a fundraising goal for Riley Children's Hospital. Teachers and other staff members at Akron were very willing to volunteer their talents for the show in front of the entire school. Principal Brett Boggs was the "King of Rock" Elvis Presley. "Rosie O'Donnell" (Katie Miller), "The Dixie Chicks" (Susan Davis, Brenn Dahms and Virginia Higgins) performed the theme song to "The Brady Bunch" for the Akron Elementary students.25 Years AgoThe Kosciusko Community YMCA volunteers of the year are Jay Marsh and Maureen Bagwell. They were recognized at the state YMCA Spring Celebration in Indianapolis as Youth and Adult volunteers of the year. Approximately 50 other volunteers were recognized. Jay has given many hours to the summer Camp Little Eagle program and, also, with the after school program. Mrs. Bagwell has worked as the assistant swim team coach, helped with the after school program and taught aerobic classes.50 Years AgoUldis Smidchens, 21, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fricis Smidchens, Claypool, who came to this country just nine years ago, has been awarded a Danforth Foundation Fellowship for advanced study in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin.Uldis will receive a bachelor's degree from Ball State Teachers College in Muncie. He was one of 102 college seniors picked for the award out of 802 candidates throughout the United States.75 Years AgoThe Warsaw night police are now patrolling North Lake Street and East Main Street. Complaints have been made to the police that North Lake Street has been used as a speedway. This is a part of the Lincoln Highway.Heavily loaded trucks from Fort Wayne and Marshall County have been using Main, an asphalt street. A few nights ago Police Sgt. Raymond Neff prevented a tractor and truck as large as a freight train, from passing over this street.
