10 Years Ago A.J. Jansen, a Harrison Elementary School kindergartner, took top honors at the 2001 Indiana State Chess Grade Championship May 5 at the Canterbury School in Fort Wayne. The son of Dr. Dean and Carol Lyn Jansen, Warsaw, A.J. came across a stored chess board at home while his mom was cleaning. His dad taught him how to play, and now, after three months, can’t beat him anymore. The Jansen children are allowed to read a book in bed before they go to sleep. A.J. reads a chess book charting the games and strategy of former world chess champion Bobby Eischer. 25 Years Ago For Carol Swonger, a Claypool nurse employed with the State Board of Health, it’s always nice to get home - especially when you’ve just returned from a cordial visit in Kiev, Russia. Mrs. Swonger and 31 other American health officials returned last week from the Soviet Union after they unknowingly spent four days in Kiev during the Chernobyl nuclear plant explosion, which emitted radiation throughout much of the northern hemisphere. She is one of only a few Americans to tell of life in the Soviet Union during the nuclear catastrophe. Mrs. Swonger was pronounced healthy by medical officials who tested her in Chicago upon her return. 50 Years Ago Miss Rebecca DePoy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth DePoy, Warsaw, has been chosen as the first recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the newly founded Tri Kappa Alpha Lambda Scholarship Foundation. The grant is given over a four-year period. Next fall she will enroll at Ball State Teachers College in Muncie. 75 Years Ago Mrs. William Ellison, prominent Winona Lake resident and club worker, was the unanimous choice of members of the Indiana Federation of Clubs for office of recording secretary, it was announced today.
